Rickey Okay is an Indian born Kiwi from Auckland. Throughout his earlier years, he spent his time playing sports, hitting the books and listening to rock music. In intermediate, he started to play the drums, but couldn’t afford his own set so he started to find other hobbies. He had always enjoyed the creative subjects at school such as Art and Media Studies and instead of heading down the path of accounting like his father, he went to Auckland University of Technology and studied Graphic Design.
Although music wasn’t a priority for Rickey just yet, he did spend time writing raps and joining in rap battles during his lunch breaks. It wasn’t until he went on a road trip to Ragamuffin that Deach (Smashproof) suggested he take music seriously. Arriving back in Auckland, Rickey started writing.
From there on he met Cavell and started to build a foundation of his own in the music industry. He was writing raps and even laying down tracks. Rickey has since featured on the songs Bubblegum with Rob Vegas and Skinny Jeans with DLove and Shayne. Appearing in both music videos, receiving loads of radio air time and interviews, has pushed Rickey into the view of DNK World Music, with whom he has just been signed.
Rickey is currently finishing off his mixtape which he hopes to release soon, and filming the clip for his new single “Straight To The Top”. Check Rickey Okay on heavy rotation all this week. Supporting local hiphop cause “WE DO THIS ALL DAY”.
